Washington - US Senator John McCain was projected Tuesday to win the Republican presidential primary in New Jersey, television networks projected.
The race was too close to declare a winner in the Democratic party's New Jersey primary between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
McCain would win all 52 Republican delegates that were up for grabs in New Jersey - the eighth-largest number among states voting Tuesday. The Arizona senator beat out former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee.
New Jersey is even more important for Democrats. Its 127 delegates make it the fourth-largest prize Tuesday, though unlike in the Republican race they will be divided proportionally. Clinton, a senator from the neighbouring state of New York, had been expected to win, but polls showed Obama pulling closer in recent days.
