Ice storm kills 13, turns branches to sledge hammers in US mid-west

Washington - An ice storm glazed the US mid-west with a thick layer of cold Monday, claiming at least 13 lives and turning ice-coated branches into lethal sledgehammers. The storm that spread destruction across five states including Oklahoma, Missouri and Illinois resulted from a hot humid air mass moving up from the US south colliding with an Arctic air mass coming from the north, weather forecasters said. US broadcasters showed images of ice-laden branches that had crashed through the roofs of houses and cars, and of traffic creeping along treacherous highways. More than 500,000 people were without power, most of them in Oklahma, NBC broadcaster reported. The bad weather was expected to continue, with 19 states on the storm warming watch list, NBC said.
