Sarkozy heads to US to seal France's friendship

Washington - French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrives in Washington on Tuesday for a two-day visit, his first official visit to the US since being elected, to renew France's friendship with the US, said the French president's spokesman.

EPA/ZIPI EPA/ZIPI On Tuesday evening Sarkozy will have dinner with President George W Bush at the White House. The French president, who was elected in May, spent his holiday in August at the Bush family home in Kennebunkport, Maine. Sarkozy is expected to discuss shared opposition to Iran's nuclear programme and support for Kosovo's push for independence from Serbia, according to spokesman David Martinon. Bush also has a firm ally in France regarding the Mideast crisis as Sarkozy's position is far more pro-Israeli than that of any of his predecessors. In a speech to Congress on Wednesday Sarkozy wants to send a 'message to the American people.' But he is also expected to stress the importance of a stronger Europe and perhaps challenge US environmental policies concerning climate change. During his two-day visit Sarkozy is also scheduled to meet with US veterans of World War II who were at the landing of US troops in Normandy. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
