Flooding displaces hundreds across central US

Washington - Heavy rains and flooding forced hundreds of residents from their homes in the central US state of Kansas, local media reported Monday. More than 20 inches of rain fell in three days causing Governor Kathleen Sibelius to declare 18 Kansas counties disaster areas, as rivers in the southeastern part of the state hit record water levels, the Wichita Eagle newspaper reported. In Owasatomie in one of the state's worst hit areas, nearly half of the town's 4,600 residents had been evacuated, ABC News reported. A refinery in Coffeyville, Kansas spilled more than 150,000 litres of oil into the flood waters of the Verdigris River, causing additional health concerns, the newspaper said. In the last two weeks, heavy rains in Texas have left 11 people dead. No new deaths were reported in Kansas. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
