Kentucky train fire causes evacuations

Washington - A cargo train carrying chemicals derailed and burst into flames in the US state of Kentucky Tuesday, causing authorities to evacuate nearby residents, television reports said. The train derailed around 8:45 am (1345 GMT) near Brooks, Kentucky, south of the state capital, Louisville, local broadcaster WLKY reported. The train was reportedly carrying liquid propane and the chemical butadiene. A railroad spokesman told WLKY that the train was headed from Birmingham, Alabama to Louisville and that it was made up of 80 cars. Images broadcast on CNN showed flames shooting into the air and large pillars of black smoke. Residents of nearby neighbourhoods and a local school had been evacuated, broadcasters said. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
