Lawyers: Cheney to testify in leak case

Washington - US Vice President Dick Cheney expected to be called to testify for the defence in the criminal trial of his former chief of staff, attorneys said Tuesday. Lawyers representing Lewis 'Scooter' Libby, formerly the top aide to Cheney, said in a federal court in Washington that they planned to call the vice president to testify. The Washington Post reported on its website that Cheney was willing to be a witness under oath. The newspaper cited sources familiar with Cheney's intentions. No sitting vice president has ever before taken the witness stand in a criminal trial, the Post reported. Libby is accused of knowingly lying to federal investigators and a grand jury during an investigation of leaks that led to the identification in the media of a CIA operative, allegedly for political purposes. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
