Washington - US President George W Bush met with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer on Friday ahead of the alliance's summit late next month in Latvia.
The two men discussed the NATO-led effort to rid Afghanistan of the Taliban and support the development of Afghan President Hamid Karzai's democratic government.
NATO, which took over the international security effort in Afghanistan earlier this month, has been involved in heavy fighting in the south against a resurgent Taliban.
Bush and de Hoop Scheffer emphasized the importance of the alliance promoting democratic and human rights.
'There we are trying to assist the Afghan government to establish democracy, to establish human rights, to establish those values,' de Hoop Scheffer said.
The NATO summit is scheduled to take place November 28-29 in Riga.
