Former conjoined twins out of critical condition

Salt Lake City - The 4-year-old twins who were separated last week in a 26-hour operation have been removed from the critical list and have held hands for the first time since the risky surgical procedure, the family said Tuesday. Kendra and Maliyah Herrin are awake intermittently, joking with their family and nurses as the medical team at Primary Children's Medical Centre monitors their progress to make sure there are no infections, their father Jake said. 'Things are going great today,' he wrote Tuesday on the family's website. 'Maliyah is talking much more and smiling. Kendra is as well. We see progress every day, and that means it's one day closer to going home.' The girls were born joined at the pelvis and sharing a pair of legs, a liver, a single working kidney and large intestine. They were separated on August 7, with each girl getting one leg and Kendra retaining the kidney.
