Power failure halts US East Coast trains

Washington - Thousands of morning commuters on the US East Coast were stranded Thursday after an electrical failure halted intercity train service between New York and Washington. At least five trains got stuck in tunnels near Baltimore and New York, news reports said. Some reports said passengers were being led out of the tunnels. 'Some customers are still sitting aboard trains and we're working as quickly as we can to restore power,' Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero told Cable News Network (CNN) about two hours after the 8 a.m. outage on the so-called Northeast corridor. Amtrak, the government-subsidized US intercity rail service, was using diesel locomotives to move the stranded trains, reports said. It was not immediately clear what caused the breakdown, which affected commuter trains in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland states. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
