'Prime Minister Gordon Brown called off his troop reduction plan after Iraqi forces decided to take on the Shia militia in Basra, backed by 900 US soldiers, and with the British being brought back into active fighting after their withdrawal to an 'overwatch' role last September.'
This account is actually misleading. While the Iraqi attack may have been ill-advised or ill-timed, the Americans had to back them up because the British troops under orders from the MOD had made a deal with the Shia militia not to intervene. Thus, 'overwatch' is inaccurate. Thanks to the MOD is was more like 'cowerwatch'. Our soldiers deserve better leadership.
