Wife of would-be 2005 bomber jailed for 15 years by British court

London - The wife of a failed suicide bomber in Britain was Wednesday sentenced to 15 years in jail for withholding information from the authorities about his plans for 'carnage and mass murder.' Muslim convert Yeshi Girma, 32, knew of the plot to kill innocent passengers on the London Underground (Tube) network and a bus on July 21, 2005, a judge at the Old Bailey Criminal Court in London ruled. The court heard that Girma was on the phone to the would-be bomber, Hussain Osman, just 30 minutes after the failed attack and helped him to escape to Paris, and then to Rome, where he was arrested. The plot came exactly two weeks after the major suicide bombings on Tube trains and a bus on July 7, 2005, which killed 52 people and injured more than 700. Girma, a Muslim convert and the mother of Osman's three sons, sobbed throughout the hearing and raised her hands to the air as she was sentenced. She was found guilty by jury of of assisting an offender and failing to disclose information about Osman's involvement. Girma had claimed during her trial that, despite having three children with Osman, she was not married to him and did not live with him, and that she knew little of what he was doing. 'You already shared Osman's extreme views on Islam and co-ordinated the escape plan for the father of your three children after he failed to achieve his sought-after place in paradise,' judge Paul Worsley told her Thursday. He also said that had she gone to the police, the subsequent fatal police shooting of innocent Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes - mistaken for Osman by officers - could have been avoided. Her brother, Esayas Girma, 22, and her sister, Mulu Girma, 24, whom she had enlisted to help her escape plan, were jailed for 10 years, the court ruled. Mulu's boyfriend Mohamed Kabashi, 25, from Brighton, who admitted assisting Osman and failing to disclose information before the trial began, was jailed for nine years. Osman was jailed for life at Woolwich Crown Court in London last year for conspiracy to murder, alongside co-accused Yassin Omar, Ramzi Mohamed and Muktar Ibrahim.
