EPA/CLAUDIO ONORATIArchbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin said in a statement Thursday he saw the appointment as "...a sign of the interest of Pope Benedict to come to Northern Ireland, if not in the immediate future" adding the visit would have "the symbolic meaning of ending an era of our history and opening to something new, north and south".Pope Benedict's predecessor John Paul visited the Republic of Ireland in 1979 but chose not to travel to Northern Ireland because of sectarian violence. Irish media have suggested in the past that the pope visit Northern Ireland with Queen Elizabeth.Dr Brady, one of 24 cardinals named by Pope Benedict on Wednesday will be appointed cardinal in Rome on 24 November.
