Britain releases half its terror suspects without charge

London - Half the terror suspects in Britain who have been arrested since the attacks of September 11, 2001 have been released without charge, the British Home Office (Interior Ministry) said Tuesday. From the attack in the United States until the end of March a total of 1228 people had been arrested as terrorist suspects. More than 669 of them had been released without charge in the meantime, while another 224 had been convicted and another 114 were awaiting trial, the Home Office said. The numbers are grist to the mill of those who oppose moves to extend the period - currently 28 days - for which a terror suspect can be held without charge. 'What would have happened if those 669 people had been held for five or six months?' Labour Member of Parliament David Winnick said.
