What about the white slaves like the 12 year olds forced to work down the pits?
Also the young girls who were forced into service and had to get up at 4 am in the mornings to clean out the masters fires? These same girls were fearful of being raped by the young master of the house. What about the people forced from their homes to make way for sheep?

Most of the opportunity and execution of the African slave trade was provided by native Africans, who also reaped the rich rewards. Actually - in many parts of Africa they're still doing it. Sooo - let the African critics get out there where they could be effective and start doing something.

that africa's problems have more to do with the corrupt governments and the tribal wars that are causing widespread devastation across much of the continent than the slave trade.
Instead of trying to get compensation for the slave trade perhaps those campaigning for money should try and do something about the slaves that are still existing in Sudan etc.
People have been treated unfairly all over the world throughout history. Take women all over the world who even now in this country are often unable to reach their full potential because of the lack of support for mothers and the disinclination to promote women to high levels of responsibility within companies. Should we be compensated for this inequality that may take many many years to rectify? Should we be given money because our great grandmothers were unable to earn it themselves? Should descendants of those in the working class be given money because their parents were encouraged to go to work rather than university and therefore were unable to earn as much as those from the upper and middle classes during the course of their careers?
Yes slavery was awful but it is not possible to right all the wrongs that have occured within the hundereds of years before any of us were even born.
As far as I can see there are people on here who, far from making a valid comment on this article, have simply made incredibly racist and ignorant remarks.
I don't know about apologising for the slave trade, but they should certainly apologise for that.
