Camilla "recovering well" after hysterectomy operation

London - The Duchess of Cornwall, wife of Britain's Prince Charles, has undergone a hysterectomy operation in a private hospital in London from which she is 'recovering well,' the royal household said Monday. The 59-year-old Duchess, more widely known as Camilla, is expected to remain in hospital for the rest of the week, Clarence House, the London residence of Charles and his wife, said. She would then have to rest for up to six weeks. The operation, which involves the removal of the womb, was carried out in the private King Edward VII Hospital, where Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the royal family have previously been treated. Clarence House has described the operation as 'routine' and said it was not cancer-related. The Duchess, who married Prince Charles, 58, two years ago, only recently returned from a 10-day tour with the Prince to five states on the Arabian peninsula. Observers said the strain of the tour had evidently taken its toll on Camilla, who was ordered to rest repeatedly during the trip. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
