Elections in Northern Ireland to go ahead on March 7

London - Elections to a regional assembly in Northern Ireland will go ahead as planned on March 7, the leaders of Britain and Ireland confirmed Tuesday. Prime Minister Tony Blair and his Irish counterpart, Bertie Ahern, made the statement after talks in London Tuesday. Confirmation of an earlier timetable for a return to self-government in Northern Ireland came only days after Sinn Fein, the main nationalist party in the province, voted to support the police and judicial structures in Northern Ireland. The 'historic decision' by Sinn Fein was seen as a breakthrough, allowing Protestants to give their agreement to a return to a power-sharing government in Northern Ireland, suspended in October, 2002. Under the plan, elections to the regional parliament (assembly) will be held on March 7, and a power-sharing executive (government) would be in place by March 26. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
