Heavy fog continues to disrupt Heathrow

London - Heavy fog continued Thursday to wreak havoc on Heathow airport's operations, with at least 350 inner-European flights having to be cancelled, creating chaos for Christmas-season travellers. The flight cancellations come atop the more than 200 flights which had to be cancelled on Wednesday, stranding thousands of travellers at the airport. British Airways alone had to cancel 180 flights on Thursday, including all Heathrow incoming and outbound services within Britain itself. BA advised passengers to seek information about their flights before even departing for the aiport. Other airlines were also forced by the poor visibility conditions to ground their airplanes, with severe effects for travel to other European destinations. The timing of the chaos could not be worse, coming in the busy days just prior to Christmas, when many people are travelling to return home to their families or heading away on holidays. Aviation authorities were keeping a watchful eye on the weather reports, with meteorologists cautioning that the poor visibility conditions could last at least up through December 24. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
