William, what planet are you from?
I'm from Earth, Kathy. Why else would I be taking up the necessary advocacy for AIDS?
considering all or most deseases are natural, your statement just states the obvious. Of course humans reserve the right to defend themselves against the same said deseases. As for Mandela, sorry it just aint gonna work for me. no peep on Zimbabwe till now?....yeesh. He seemed more interested in collecting acolades in his later years or making generic statements on the plight of the world problems.
Oh, my dear, Juha. How could you be so foolish as to make an argument like this one? 'considering all or most diseases are natural, your statement just states the obvious. Of course humans reserve the right to defend themselves against the same said diseases.'
Shall we hold the rights of the hare more superior to the rights of the hawk or the cat? Why? We cannot do any such thing and remain morally consistent, now can we?
Is the oil refinery a product of Nature? Did The Planet produce these of her own accord? No? Then how may arrogate to ourselves the right to construct drug factories and ignore the consequences?
AIDS is The Planet's great argument against the arrogance of human beings. How dare they set themselves up to be superior to all other organisms? Human beings were given an immune system just as every other animal in existence. Humans, however, stepped outside the bounds of Nature and created medicines that support and augment their immune systems. No other animal beget by The Planet has exhibited such greed.
AIDS, you see, is The Planet's Knight of Balance. It circumvents human ingenuity and renders the human susceptible to all the other tiny organisms that would feed its body. Can you not see the justice in this? Are we to adopt a true land ethic or not? If we are, then we must concede to nature as The Planet sees fit. With AIDS, She may well be depriving us of any choice.

Before we become too terribly concerned with the elimination of AIDS, we should give due consideration to the natural features of the African continent and how they might be affected by over large population of humans.
sp4 - really? the fact is, Africa is actually a very sparsely populated land mass.
Inanimate objects can and often do have legal standing.
sp4 - only humans have rights, William. That is who rights are for...people. Law is codified moraliuty, and laws are created by people. Legal standing, comes from law, and so it is a human construct. Land and othe rthings can have legal standing, but that does not mean they have rights.
The river, for instance, should be allowed to speak on the behalf of all the life it sustains, not just the lives of humans.
sp4 - Last time I heard, rivers canot articulate their beliefs William, unless you have been eating some of the local mushrooms in your area. They, William in-the-tinfoil-hat, are not sentient. They do not invent concepts and are not self-aware. If you hear the river speak too often, run, don't walk, to the nearest psychologial treatment center.
The organism that causes AIDS is of completely natural origin and is The Planet's attempt to place limits on human population growth,
sp4 - by what calculus do you draw such a conclusion? How do we know AIDS is of completely natural origin, in the day and age we live in???
thereby protecting the planet from humanity.
sp4 - by what calculus do you derive that AIDS will protect anyone from anything??? Aids is not depopulating the world. It can even be controlled by behavior, and drugs.
One other thing, William, by your logic, anytime the human species BEATS a disease, it can be rationalized as the planet picking humans over the other species. After all, humans are a species on this planet, ust like every other species.
AIDS too, should be allowed to speak on the behalf of all the life The Planet Sustains,
sp4 - Aids is not a sentient life form and therefore cannot speak William of-the-tinfoil-hat. AIDS is a viral organism. If you think AIDS is pseaking to you, run to that psych ward I mentioned above.
not just human life.
sp4 - oh...brother.
We should be chary of eradicating anything and every thing we find noxious or harmful, for such things have a larger purpose than sustaining their own lives while taking ours.
sp4 - really? By what calculus do you arrive at the conclusion that a vius has a 'larger purpose'????
This is interesting. In the past, we've had religous radicals (nutjobs, freaks, geeks, dildos,) believe in faith healing and letting 'gods will' prevail in sickness and disease.
Now, the libnazi extreme has replaced the judeo-christian concept with a 'sentient earth' diety, complete with a rationalization for just letting folks die.
Micheal Crighton was right: folks will invent a religion if they do not have one.
Tonny, are you listening???
I was going to say, before I had to deal with the earth worshiping nutjob above, that Mandela could serve his fellow africans more effectively if he was more forceful in confronting:
the 45,000 per month dying in the Congo
the mess in Darfur
The tragedy in Zimbabwe.
This is just another example of Lets-take-the-focus-off-the real messes before someone notices.
William, let me see if I have this straight. Are you saying that the vaccines that have been employed-smallpox, polio etc., have interfered with the natural culling of the herd? That these advances in medicine have messed up mother earth's natural progression?
Absolutely right, Kathy! You get a gold star.
Automobiles and oil refineries have not done half as much damage to The Planet as medicine has done. Oh, there is very little that is natural about a pharmaceuticals plant. Such artifacts are just as artificial as a Rolls Royce.
You see, The Planet can recover from the machines Man has made. All of them eventually fail and rust back into the ores from which they came. But She cannot recover from Man. There are simply too many of him. If we allow him to continue using medicines he will continue his entirely too numerous existence on The Planet. Something must be done to limit his numbers. AIDS is The Planet's answer to Man's arrogance. His medicines cannot cure AIDS and AIDS opens the door for all the other limiting organisms The Planet made for Man. Man should be meek and accept Her law. He should respect The Planet, not try to rape Her. She may seem cruel at times, but She does know best.
Dearest EssPeeFour,
I can see you are not up on a number of opinions issued by the Supreme Court of the United States. It is also clear that you have never read any of the important works like A Sand County Almanac, either. Clearly you are woefully ignorant. Let us say that the longest serving member of the Supreme Court when you say that only humans have rights.
Can a river speak? In its own way, yes. If you had ever spent half as much time on rivers as I have you would know this to be True. Sometimes, though, it is Man who speaks so loud that the rivers have no voice left. They are often full of old tires, broken glass and rotting cans. Oh, yes, my friend, the rivers speak. They have a voice. You should spend some time visiting the one nearest your home.
If a human beats off a disease simply because its immune system was able to fend it off, then neither I nor The Planet have a complaint. This is in full keeping with natural law, but Man seldom fights off a disease alone. He almost always employs a madicine of some kind to help him in his defense. He cheats. He refuses to accept his fate.
The wonderful thing about AIDS is that while drugs can and do help a human fend off AIDS for a while, AIDS or some other organism inevitably triumphs over the madicine and the human's immune system. An infected human who seeks treatment typically will cease any attempt to procreate. If the human does attempt to procreate, or simply have fun, then another human is infected with AIDS and the cycle is begun anew in another body. You underestimate AIDS, my friend. It is a powerful ally of The Planet and is sure to win in the long run.
