Bus plunges in river in Kashmir, 26 feared dead

New Delhi - At least 26 people were feared dead after a bus they were travelling in swerved off a mountain road and plunged into a river in India-administered Kashmir on Sunday, a news report said. The bus carrying about 30 passengers, fell into the Chenab River in the Doda district, about 180 kilometres north-east of the state's winter capital Jammu, the IANS news agency reported. Four people fell out of the bus as it rolled down the mountain into the river and were seriously injured, district police chief Prabhat Singh said. He told the news agency that there was a 'very remote chance' that passengers would survive as the Chenab was a fast-flowing river. 'The bus is completely submerged and we cannot see it. The Indian army has been pressed into rescue but the rapid current and deep water are hampering the operation,' Singh said. The survivors of the crash were moved to a local hospital for treatment. Road accidents take a high toll in India, which accounts for about 10 per cent of the 1.2 million fatal road accidents recorded worldwide each year. Many accidents are reported from mountainous regions like Jammu and Kashmir and are usually caused by reckless driving, bad roads or the poor condition of vehicles.
