Security Council extends political mission in Nepal

New York - The UN Security Council on Friday extended the UN mission in Nepal by another six months. The political observers are to remain in the Himalayan state until July 23, but the mission cannot last indefinitely, the council said of its unanimous decision. The term of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), set up by the UN to support the peace process in Nepal, was due to end Friday. UNMIN started work in Nepal in January 2007, following the signing of a comprehensive peace agreement between the government and the Maoist rebels to end a years long communist insurgency. The mission scaled back in June after Nepal's election, limiting itself to political affairs as well as monitoring of arms of the former rebel combatants. The Security Council has already extended the 750-strong mission twice. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon would like to slowly decrease the size of the mission.
