Reports: Monsoon rains wreck havoc in north-west Pakistan, 35 dead

Islamabad - At least 35 people have been killed in torrential rains lashing most of Pakistan, media reports said on Monday. Persistent downpours Sunday night and Monday morning triggered flashfloods in the north-west Khyber tribal district, killing 16 people and destroying 50 houses, the Urdu-language news channel Aaj Tv reported. In neighboring North-West Frontier Province (NWFP), nine people drowned in floods in the provincial capital of Peshawar, while a woman was killed when the roof of her house collapsed in Kohat. Authorities have advised people in Nowshehra district along the River Kabul to move to higher ground. Four people were killed in the south-west province of Balochistan. including three who drowned and a girl who was electrocuted. In the central province of Punjab, three members of the same family, including two children, died when the roof of a house collapsed. Another person died in the southern province of Sindh. Another Urdu-language news channel, Geo TV, said at least 23 people were missing after three boats carrying rescue workers capsized near Peshawar.
