Obama ends Afghanistan tour after talks with Karzai (2nd Roundup)

Kabul - Presumptive Democratic Party nominee for the US presidency Barack Obama ended his visit to Afghanistan Sunday after talks with President Hamed Karzai which focused on the country's security situation, terrorism, countering the drug trade and US- Afghan cooperation. CNN reported that Obama left Kabul for an undisclosed location - probably for security reasons - after his talks with Karzai. Obama is due to visit several Middle East countries and his next stop is possibly Iraq. Precise details of the Obama-Karzai talks were not published, and CNN only showed him speaking with US soldiers on the fundamental difficulties of dealing with a guerrilla war. Earlier, an official from the presidential palace said Obama and Karzai had met at the palace for talks, followed by a lunch. An official statement from the presidential spokesman's office said President Hamed Karzai met a team of U.S Congress headed by Barack Obama 'and they talked about Afghanistan's security situation, terrorism, counter narcotic drugs, and cooperation between the United States and Afghanistan.' The meeting was also attended by the Afghan vice presidents, defense and foreign ministers, the national security president and other high officials. The statement added that Obama also met the commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan and with US troops stationed in Nengarhar province. Obama arrived in Afghanistan on Saturday on a week-long international tour that is expected to take him to Israel, Jordan and possibly Iraq, before he visits Berlin, London and Paris. Obama's trip - details of which were kept strictly under wraps until his reported arrival at Bagram US airbase north of Kabul - is seen as an attempt to improve his perceived lack of foreign policy expertise. The Qatari Al-Jazeera network said that once in Afghanistan Obama had flown on from Bagram to visit troops in the east of the country, an area which recently saw nine US soldiers killed in a Taliban attack, one of the heaviest single-incident losses which US forces have yet suffered in Afghanistan.
