One NATO soldier killed, four injured in Afghanistan Adds: Eight Taliban insurgents killed in Nangarhar (Roundup)

Kabul - One NATO-led ISAF soldier was killed and four others wounded in an explosion in eastern Kunar province, while insurgents injured five children in a rocket attack in the same province, officials said Tuesday. 'One International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) soldier died and four were wounded when their patrol struck an improvised explosive device (IED) in Kunar province on Tuesday,' said a military statement issued from ISAF headquarter in Kabul. The statement did not mention in which area of the province the incident took place while the nationality of the victims were also not specified. In a separate incident in the same province, insurgents injured five children in a rocket attack in Narai district. Muhammad Jalal Jalal, police chief of eastern Kunar province, said insurgents with the Islamist extremist Taliban wanted to target the foreign forces base in the area but they missed the target and hit a playground, Jalal said. According to the police chief, the condition of the injured children was not life-threatening. Zabihullah Mujahi, a Taliban spokesman, claimed that they targeted foreign forces based in Kunar and the attack resulted in heavy casualties. However, foreign troops based in the eastern province of Kunar have not commented. Meanwhile, local officials in eastern Nangarhar province said that at least eight insurgents were killed and several other wounded during operations in Khogyani and Sherzad districts. Ahmad Zia, spokesman for the Nangarhar governor, said the governor himself was commanding the operation to eliminate militants activities in the area. The spokesman however did not give an exact number of the foreigners among the insurgents but said militants from other countries were also among the Taliban gathered in the area. In another development, US-led coalition forces targeted and killed a militant while detaining two others during an operation to disrupt Taliban activities in Wardak province, west of Kabul. Coalition forces searched several compounds in Sayad Abad district Monday looking for the militant leader that had been smuggling munitions and conducting attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the area, the statement released from Bagram military base said. 'During the course of the operation, the targeted militant, armed with a pistol, threatened the force and was killed with small-arms fire,' according to the statement. Coalition forces identified several militants in a wooded area and responded with airstrikes, the statement said, adding that 'coalition forces discovered and confiscated a cache of weapons, grenades, ammunition and a vehicle being used for Taliban operations.'
