Brown urges return of civil power in Pakistan

London - Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown Friday called on Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf to restore democracy and civil power 'as soon as is possible.' Brown, speaking on Sky News, urged General Musharraf to release opposition figures who are under house arrest and to move ahead with holding democratic elections. 'I would urge the Pakistan authorities and President Musharraf to restore the order that we have had until the state of emergency was declared, to release political prisoners, to move ahead as he has promised with holding elections, not to bring people under house arrest,' Brown said. 'I think the whole international community is united in saying that to the country,' he added. Earlier Friday, Jemimah Khan, the former wife of opposition politician and cricket hero Imran Khan, said Britain should suspend aid to Pakistan until democracy is restored.
