Four Taliban killed as rebels attack US base in south Afghanistan

Kabul - Four suspected Taliban fighters were killed as the insurgents for the second time in a week attacked a US base in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, US military said. The militants attacked a US military US base, Anaconda, in southern Oruzgan province at daybreak using small-arms fire and rockets, US military said in a statement. The combined Afghan and US-led coalition forces repelled the attack and killed four Taliban militants, the statement said, adding that the militants lost 23 fighters last Tuesday when they attacked the same base from three directions. 'This was the second time this week Firebase Anaconda was directly attacked by insurgents,' the statement said, adding that 'coalition leaders believe these actions could possibly be a rehearsal for a much bigger attack, possibly an attempt to completely overrun the post.' After sustaining a great loss in 2006, the Taliban have refrained from conducting face-to-face fighting with Afghan and international forces and instead have resorted in guerrilla-type attacks such as hit-and-run tactics, or increased the usage of suicide and roadside attacks.
