Hundreds displaced by floods in southern Nepal

Kathmandu - Incessant monsoon rains across Nepal have displaced hundreds of people and submerged dozens of villages, officials said Wednesday. The Home Ministry said at least half a dozen southern districts in central Nepal were under rising flood waters after major rivers burst their banks. But no deaths had been reported so far. The worst-affected district was Mahottari, about 140 kilometres south-east of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, where officials said dozens of villages were inundated. 'Jaleshwor, the district headquarters of Mahottari, has turned into an island and communication links with rural areas around the town have been severed,' ministry officials said. Jaleshwor town itself was under two feet of water and about 100 families were displaced from their homes. The rising water had also submerged roads in several southern districts after Ratu River burst its banks. In the neighbouring Bara district at least 100 houses were under water in the southern part of the district near the border with India. Officials said many of the major rivers in south-central Nepal were flowing above the danger level and some had burst their banks, inundating farmland. The meteorological department said some parts of south-central Nepal had received as much as 400 millimetres of rain in the past five days. The department said more heavy rains were expected over the coming days. At least 30 people have died in landslides and flash floods across the Himalayan nation since monsoons began nearly two months ago. Nepal receives nearly 80 per cent of its total annual rainfall during four-month monsoon season that lasts from June to late September.
