Rains trigger landslides, killing 65 in Bangladesh (1st Lead)

Dhaka - Landslides triggered by torrential rains Monday killed at least 65 people in the southern Bangladesh port city of Chittagong, officials said. A series of dangerous mudslides occurred in different parts of the port city with low-height hills dotting the landscape of the country's business capital. Heavy downpours disrupted life and economic activities, divisional commissioner Mukhlesur Rahman said. 'Many shanty homes located at the foothills have been buried under piles of mud and gravel,' said Rahman, who is coordinating the rescue operation. Witnesses in the port city, 265 kilometres south of the capital Dhaka, said most of the deaths were caused by heavy stones hitting the fragile dwellings. Rescuers feared many were trapped in the debris but the driving rain was slowing down the efforts to find them. The early monsoon rains also set off flash floods in Chittagong and in several other districts in the north-east of the country, making several thousand people homeless. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
