Indian police arrest two men in connection with train bombings

New Delhi - Indian police have arrested two men in connection with last month's blasts on a train to Pakistan that left 68 people dead, news outlets reported Wednesday, saying the arrests could provide vital leads to unravelling the bombings conspiracy. A special investigative team arrested Huzaifa (who uses one name) and Pooran Singh Thakur, who allegedly sold one of the four suitcases in which the fire-bombs were planted, the PTI news agency reported, quoting police sources. The men were arrested from a shop called Abhinandan Bag Centre in the central city of Indore and were being brought to Panipat city in the northern state of Haryana for further questioning. Sixty-eight mainly Pakistani passengers were killed in two blasts on the Samjhauta Express near Panipat, 100 kilometres north of Delhi, on February 18. Police sources told the NDTV network that Huzaifa and Thakur, who would be asked to identify sketches of suspects, might hold important clues that could lead to progress in the investigation. But the PTI reported that the two were not cooperating in the probe and were unable to provide the sales record to the police. Investigations by the police and security agencies had revealed that suitcase bombs were used to start fires in the two coaches in the Samjhauta Express as it headed for Lahore in Pakistan with 600 people on board. Police had recovered two suitcases of explosives weighing 20 kilograms each and said there were at least two more on the carriage that caught fire. Soon after the bombing, Indian police released sketches of two suspects who were involved in the blasts. But news outlets, quoting police officials, reported that as many as six bombers were involved in setting up the explosions.
