International troops kill two Afghan civilians

Kabul - Two Afghan civilians died and four were injured in an accidental mortar shelling by international troops during an engagement with Taliban insurgents, the military said Tuesday. The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was investigating the incident, which occurred Monday in Garmsir in the southern Helmand Province. 'ISAF provided immediate medical attention to the injured civilians and will continue to provide support in any way we can,' spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Rory Bruce said in a statement. 'We are deeply saddened by the news of the loss of innocent civilians during this engagement and our thoughts are with the bereaved families,' he added. This was the latest of a string of civilian deaths involving foreign troops in Afghanistan, mainly in the south where Taliban forces are believed to be preparing a major spring offensive. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
