Lima - At least 22 people died and a similar number were wounded on Thursday in Peru when a long-distance bus overturned on the road in the province of Arequipa.

The police said the accident took place in the early morning hours. The bus was apparently travelling too fast and overturned as it emerged from the Vitor Tunnel.

An investigation is underway to determine the causes of the accident.

The authorities indicated that 20 people died at the site of the accident and two more died as they were being taken to hospital.

The injured, including a seven-month-old baby, were taken to the Honorio Delgado Hospital in Arequipa - more than one thousand kilometres south of Lima - and to the hospital at the La Joya military base.
