From Monsters and Critics.com US News Washington - The US Senate voted on Wednesday to defeat a constitutional amendment that would have banned gay marriage. The amendment was largely seen as an attempt by US President George W Bush\'s Republicans to shore up the conservative voting base ahead of November\'s congressional elections. But the 49-48 tally fell short of the 60 votes needed to end debate and move to an up-or-down vote. The amendment defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur© Copyright 2003 - 2005 by monstersandcritics.com.
