One dead, 100 wounded in Los Angeles prison riot

Washington - A huge riot by inmates Saturday at a Los Angeles, California prison left at least one person dead, local television reported.

The riot involved 4,000 inmates at Wayside Prison in Castaic, California, KCAL television said on its website, citing Los Angles County Fire Department officials. At least 100 inmates were wounded in the fracas, including as many as nine with serious injuries.

There were no immediate reports of how the melee began around 3 p.m. (2300 GMT) in the high-security wing of the prison, about 65 kilometres west of Los Angeles.
