Washington - US President George W. Bush is planning to make alternative energy a cornerstone of his annual State of the Union address next week, he said in an interview broadcast late Friday.

He will talk about the issue 'big time' during his speech on Tuesday to a joint session of Congress, Bush told CBS News in an exclusive White House interview.

He said that he wants to address alternative sources of energy to reduce the country's dependence on energy from foreign sources, as well as for environmental benefits over now-widespread use of fossil fuels.

Bush said that he preferred to 'promote and actually advance new technologies' as a way to increase domestic energy production.

'We have got a serious problem, and now is the time to fix it,' he said.
