Bermuda residents were batting down the hatches after Florence was upgraded to a category-one hurricane early Sunday, but the small British territory was expected to escape the eye of the storm, which was expected to pass close to the island on Monday morning.
At 1100 Atlantic Standard Time (1500 GMT), the hurricane was located 415 kilometres south south-west of Bermuda, the hurricane center said.
Florence was expected to create waves of up to 2.5 metres above normal and bring heavy rainfall and gusting winds.
