A missile fired from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California intercepted a rocket launched from Kodiak Island, the Pentagon said.
'Although not a primary objective for the data collection flight test, an intercept of the target warhead was achieved,' the military said.
US President George W Bush has stepped up testing of missile defence during his tenure, and the military has already deployed a limited system in Fort Greeley, Alaska.
Missile defence is aimed at protecting the United States and its allies from an attack by a rogue state, namely North Korea or Iran.
