'Those comments were wholly inappropriate and offensive, and really don't have a place in this or any other debate,' said Trent Duffy, a White House spokesman.
Pat Robertson, a conservative who has previously made politically controversial remarks, said God might have punished Sharon for withdrawing from the Gaza Strip and dividing 'God's land'.
'The prophet Joel makes it very clear that God has enmity against those who 'divide my land',' Robertson said during his television show.
'For any prime minister of Israel who decides he is going to carve it up and give it away, God says 'no, this is mine,'' Robertson added.
Sharon suffered a massive stroke Wednesday that has left him incapacitated. U.S. President George W. Bush has offered his prayers for the Israeli leader.
Robertson, while criticizing Sharon for the Gaza pullout, also called the Israeli leader a 'a very likeable person' and expressed sadness about his condition.
'I would say woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease the E.U., the United Nations, or the United States of America,' Robertson said. 'God says 'This land belongs to me. You'd better leave it alone'.'
Robertson has been criticized in the past for marking controversial statements. In August, he suggested the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez should be assassinated. Robertson later apologized for the comment.
