Ramallah - Sirens wailed in Ramallah at noon Thursday and Palestinians stood at silent attention to mark the 60th anniversary of the Naqba (Catastrophe), the term they give for the founding of Israel and the beginning of the Palestinian diaspora.

The sirens were broadcast over radio to enable people throughout the Palestinian areas to stand in silence to mark the occasion.

Residents were flocking to the central square in Ramallah, where the central commemoration was to take place later in the day. Some carried black flags, or wore black T-shirts with the legend '1948,' with the number '8' in red and the '194,' a reference to UN Resolution 194 calling for the return of the Palestinian refugees, in white.
