From Monsters and Critics.com Middle East News Sana'a, Yemen - A Yemeni state security court on Monday sentenced four Shiite rebels to death for the killing of two army officers last year. The four men, only one of them was present in court, ambushed a military vehicle on a road in the restive province of Saada last year, killing two officers and injuring two, the court said. Three of the convicts are still on the run. Fighting between rebels loyal to the outlawed Believing Youth group, known as Houthis, and government forces has been raging on and off in the north-western province of Saada since mid-2004. The authorities accuse the rebels of trying to reinstall the imamate rule that was toppled by a republican revolution in northern Yemen in 1962. The rebels say they were only defending their areas from army offensives. Houthis belong mostly to the Zaidi sect of Islam, which is regarded as a moderate sect. © Copyright 2007 by monstersandcritics.com. This notice cannot be removed without permission. |
