Amman - European Union's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, has arrived in Amman for a meeting with King Abdullah Sunday to discuss the prospects of relaunching peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, officials said.

Solana will also confer with Foreign Minister Abdul Ilah Khatib on efforts by the Middle East quartet to spur the stalled Arab-Israeli talks, they added.

The group, which comprises EU, the United States, Russia and the United Nations, is scheduled to meet in New York early in February. Jordanian leaders hope the meeting will help kickstart the peace process.

The European foreign policy chief is on a regional tour that also involves Egypt, Palestinian territories and Israel.
