France condemns Iranian government's violence against demonstrators

Paris - The French government on Wednesday sharply criticized what it described as a violent suppression of a peaceful anti-government demonstration in the Iranian capital Tehran. 'The information about new police violence and arbitrary arrests against Iranian citizens who demonstrated peacefully troubles us greatly,' a French foreign ministry spokesperson said during an electronic press conference. 'We condemn this new wave of violence and repression,' the spokesperson said. Demonstrators and police clashed Wednesday in Tehran on a square near the US embassy, where a state-organized anti-US rally was held in observance of the Day of National Confrontation against World Imperialism. The day commemorates the 1979 seizure of the US embassy in Iran by Islamist students in support of the Iranian Revolution.
