Quake shakes southern Iranian port; scores injured (2nd Roundup)

Tehran - A magnitude-4.9 earthquake shook the southern Iranian port town of Bandar Abbas Wednesday, injuring scores of its residents, local officials said. The quake occurred early Wednesday and led to technical problems in the city, such as power cuts and telephone outages, state television reported. A spokesman for the local governor told the ISNA news agency that about 200 residents were transferred to a local hospital but most of them were immediately released and only 44 had to stay for further treatment. The spokesman did not confirm an earlier report by the official news agency IRNA of 700 people having been injured in the quake. The US Geological Survey put the quake's magnitude at 4.8, saying it occurred at 2:56 am (2326 GMT Tuesday). No fatalities were reported.
