Former Dutch parliamentarian is new UN representative in Iraq

New York - Ad Melkert, a former Dutch parliamentarian, was on Tuesday appointed the United Nation's special representative in Iraq. Melkert, also a former World Bank official, was chosen by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to succeed Staffan de Mistura to head the critical UN mission in Iraq. Melkert, 53, currently serves as an associate administrator in the UN Development Programme, which each year disburses billions of dollars to assist developing countries in various projects, from building schools to economic development. The UN has maintained a mission in war-torn Iraq, which is tasked with assisting reconstruction work, implementing the International Compact with Iraq - an internationally funded programme, and pursuing the process of national reconciliation and inclusive political dialogue.
