Ex-Baathist proclaims US withdrawal "glorious victory" (Extra)

Baghdad - A statement purportedly from Saddam Hussein's former deputy, Ezzat Ibrahim al-Duri, on Tuesday celebrated US troop withdrawals from Iraqi cities as an 'historic, glorious victory.' 'June 30, 2009, is your glorious day that embodies your historic victories,' said a statement purportedly posted by al-Duri on a website for supporters of Saddam Hussein. The statement said al-Duri would 'continue to escalate the fighting until our country is fully liberated.' 'There will be no negotiations with the occupiers ... the jihad must go on, even if it lasts for hundreds of years, until the enemy accepts our conditions,' it said. Following the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, Arab and foreign media published reports that Al-Duri had been either killed or arrested. But in 2007, the banned Baath Party announced that he had been made its new leader, and statements purportedly from him have continued to appear. In 2008, the Dubai-based al-Arabiya satellite news station broadcast a message thought to be from him urging Iraqis to 'strike the enemy wherever they may be.'
