Iraq to restore citizenship to thousands who fled to Iran

Baghdad - The Iraqi government will restore the citizenship of thousands of Iraqis who fled to Iran during the Iran-Iraq war, an Iraqi official said on Sunday. Qadhi Asghar al-Musawi, in remarks published in Baghdad's al- Sabbah newspaper, said the government would issue fresh citizenship certificates to roughly 3,500 Iraqis who had fled the country during the 1980-1988 war with Iran. At least 438 orphans, widows and the most destitute of the returning migrants would receive public assistance on their return, al-Musawi said. Many thousands of Iraqis, mostly Kurdish and Shiite Muslims who lived in the region straddling the modern Iranian-Iraqi border and who had old family ties in what is today Iran, fled to the Iranian side of the border during Iraq's long and costly war with Iran.
