Czech EU presidency calls bloc's Middle East mission success

Prague - The prime minister of the Czech Republic on Wednesday termed a Czech-led EU peace mission to the Middle East a success, citing Israel's decision to allow humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. 'The EU mission was very successful,' said Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek. 'The humanitarian corridor has been restored and we have stipulated conditions for concluding a ceasefire.' Israel made the decision to open the corridor on Wednesday, a day after its leadership rejected the mission's call for a ceasefire. However, the mission's return to Prague was overshadowed by the news that Israel on Tuesday had shelled a UN school in northern Gaza, killing at least 46 civilians. The Czech EU presidency said in a statement late on Wednesday that it was 'profoundly disturbed by the loss of civilian life at a school in Jabaliya that resulted from Israeli military action.'
