Women, children now 50 per cent of Gaza death toll, says UN (Extra)

Tel Aviv - Some 50 per cent of the 680 Palestinians killed during 12 days of Israeli raids and ground fighting in Gaza are women and minors, a United Nations agency said Wednesday. The actual civilian toll may be higher, because health officials have been unable to establish the number of civilians of the men killed. The percentage of women and children killed has risen dramatically since Israel expanded its Gaza offensive - aimed at curbing over seven years of rocket and mortar attacks at southern Israel - by sending in ground troops on Saturday. Up till several days ago, the portion stood at 35 to 40 per cent, said a spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
