Syrian rights group accuses security forces of killing activist

Damascus - A Syrian human rights group on Wednesday accused Syrian security forces of killing a human-rights activist in front of his house in a village near the Lebanese border. 'A security patrol shot Sami Maatouk late Tuesday under the pretext of pursuing smugglers,' said a statement issued by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Syrian Human Rights watchdog said that authorities are 'fully responsible for Maatouk's death' and demanded an 'immediate, transparent and impartial investigation in order to bring the murderers to justice.' Matouk, 31, was an English literature graduate and nephew of Khalil Matouk, a lawyer who represents human-rights activists in Syria.
