and then send them postage due back to their president.
I just gotta say whatever their intention they are complete idiots. I've crossed those borders on many occasions. Its very simple; You MUST have a VISA. They are required for US citizens and must be applied for at the Syrian embassy in DC. This can be done by Fed Ex. I've done the 'taxi' thing from Beirut and its a smooth affair as long as the Israelis are not bombing the country. In 06 I took a taxi and it cost 20 bucks for 2 seats from Beirut. Once the bombing starting that fare went up to 2000$. Point being is that its easy as hell to move around the region with the correct documentation and a little (or lot of) cash. Syria is a friendly, safe fascinating tolerant and amazing country to visit as is Lebanon and vanilla-like Jordan. Anybody living in the area should know these ins and outs. Ask any backpacker.
