Tehran - Iranian Nobel peace laureate Shirin Ebadi has
formed an anti-war council to avoid a military confrontation over
Iran's controversial nuclear activities, informed sources said
Wednesday.
The National Council for Peace, a non-governmental organization
aimed at neutralizing threats of war against Iran, will hold its
first session on Thursday at the central office of the Defendants of
Human Rights in Tehran.
The council has 60 members, including political activists and
economic experts, and will act outside the governmental framework to
prevent any military confrontation.
There have been reports and even official indications that the
United States and Israel might attack Iran's nuclear installations
after the Islamic state has several times ignored international
demands to suspend its uranium enrichment process.
Ebadi, 60, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 for promoting human
rights and democracy in Iran. She was the first Muslim woman to
receive the honour.

This is the kind of person the world has too few of, and too little time to listen to, while the eroding of genuine diplomacy takes a morbidly, unedifying back seat.
