US soldier sentenced to 10 years' prison for Iraq murder

Baghdad - A US soldier received a 10-year prison sentence in a court martial in Baghdad for the murder of an Iraqi man during an operation last year, the US military said Monday. Sgt. Evan Vela from the 1st Battalion, 501st Airborne, was on trial for the murder of an Iraqi man during raids last May 11 in Jurf al-Sakhr. Vela, 24, was 'found guilty on one specification of unpremeditated murder,' according to a military statement. The soldier was also found guilty of 'wrongfully placing an AK-47 on the remains of a deceased' and making a false official statement. In addition to his jail sentence, the court ruling included a reduction in rank, loss of all pay and allowances and a 'dishonourable' discharge from the army.
